Earlier I wrote about how in our time in Martinsville the company had taken a change in the direction. This isn’t altogether true.
Yes the “ hardcore “ style of wrestling was always a part of IPW, but not really to the degree that some people think. On a show with 8 or 9 matches we would have 1 Hardcore match. So if you think about it, in a years time we might have 12 Hardcore matches, but 100 wrestling matches.
We did not abandon the “ Hardcore” style either. To this day, you will still see Barbwire, Thumbtacs , and even Fans Bring the Weapons matches in IPW. But when you see those types of matches, you will see a proper buildup to them.
I actually got into a pretty heated discussion ( Meaning neither side would give up it’s position, not an argument) on the subject this past year with Brandon prophet and Jeremy Dayton. Their position is that we should still do some hardcore wrestling. I pointed out that we did, but only with a proper angle and with buildup. That I will not support Hardcore just for the sake of Hardcore. That is the difference between Shock and Story.
Lets put it into this perspective. Take two legitimate legends in the sport. Abdullah the Butcher and Dusty Rhodes. Abbie made a career of going from town to town , city to city and country to country working his violent bloody style. Truly someone considered an Innovator of Hardcore wrestling. Dusty Rhodes made a career in a much different manor, but when the story called for it, he too could and would work a hardcore match. Look at the mans forehead ! Dusty did Bardbire, Bullrope, and countless cage matches !! But they always worked it within the confines of a story.
So when people think I don’t like hardcore wrestling, I just want it to make sense.
But we were moving away from that in a sense. We were maturing I think. We wanted to save those matches to get Maximum effect out of them. If you build up a feud between two people, and then it culminates in a no rope barbwire match, that is so much more satisfying than just saying “ Next month we are having a no rope barbwire match between guy a and guy b “ Now we were building thing up as athletic contests with something tangible at risk. We have worked hard to make wins and losses mean something. Every championship should mean something, every loss should be devastating. Every win should be celebrated. That is our goal.
